Spirometry
Spirometry is the most common lung test. It measures how much air you can inhale as well as how much and how fast you can exhale air. It is used to diagnose diseases such as asthma and COPD or determine the severity of the disease. Patients are asked to take the deepest breath they can, and then exhale into the sensor as hard as possible, for as long as possible. Then, they are asked to rapidly inhale.
Spirometry is used:
- Diagnose disease or progression of diseases such as asthma and COPD
- After treatment has started and your symptoms have stabilized
- To document normal lung function
- To assess maintenance of airway function
- To evaluate the response of medications
You can do a few simple things to prepare for these tests.
- Take your medications before your test unless your instructed otherwise.
- Don’t smoke before the test if possible.
- If you use a short-acting inhaler, try not to use it for 6 to 8 hours before the test. If you do have to use it, let your provider know before the test.
