Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are a set of tests that used to determine how your lungs function by measuring the amount of air your lungs hold and how fast the air enters and exits your respiratory system. The Pulmonary Function Tests can assist in diagnosing asthma, measure severity of lung problems, and measure how successful treatments are working.
Testing your lungs can help diagnose lung diseases such as:
- Asthma
- Allergies
- Chronic bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Exercise-induced asthma

You can do a few simple things to prepare for these tests.
- Take your medications before your test unless your instructed otherwise.
- Don’t smoke before the test if possible.
- If you use a short-acting inhaler, try not to use it for 6 to 8 hours before the test. If you do have to use it, let your provider know before the test.
