Patch Testing for Allergies
Patch testing is a type of allergy skin testing. It is used to diagnose particularly, allergic contact dermatitis to a substance that someone has come into contact with, like rubber, fragrances or certain metals. This is helpful for skin and occupational allergies may be suspected. Unlike other allergy skin testing, no needles are used. Instead, patches are applied with test substances in small chambers or discs to a person’s back. The patches are secured with hypoallergenic tapes and patients are asked to keep the patch test in place for 48 hours and to keep it dry. At Allergy & Asthma Specialists, our specialists will check the skin for reactions at specific times after the patch is removed.
